If you ever wondered, like me, what’s really the difference between PSS/E and PSCAD, well here’s a quick analogy to help you decipher what the differences are. If you already know, great. If you didn’t know, hopefully you learned something, and if I’m wrong, please tell me!

PSS/E is watching from across the playground. You see the rope going around. You see whether the two kids are turning together or fighting each other. You do not see the rope itself, only the loop it makes in the air. For the big question, is anybody about to trip, the view from across the playground works fine.

PSCAD is standing right next to the rope with a slow motion camera. Every wiggle. Every ripple traveling down the line. The exact moment the rope hits the concrete.

More detail. Much slower to watch.

The tradeoff falls out of the picture on its own. From across the playground you take in the whole field at once. Standing close with the camera you see one rope, and it takes forever.

So why bother with the camera?

A steam turbine is one of the kids turning the rope. Heavy, predictable, slow to change. Watching from a distance works.

A solar inverter is a kid with a video game controller. It reacts in microseconds according to firmware, not inertia. Blink and you miss what happened. The distant view averages away the exact behavior you needed to see.

That is the whole thing. Both tools watch the same rope. They stand in different places.
